February James at Wilding Cran Gallery
On View: September 8th - October 27th, 2019 The back room of Wilding Cran Gallery has been transformed into an eerie sort of domestic space. A couch, coffee table, TV, and lamp made out of glued paper and cardboard are ghostly counterparts to actual furniture, and the artist has painted the gallery walls in a washy grey watercolor. This skeletal space is finished off with a set of framed watercolor portraits that hang throughout, each one peering out with a…

“It’s a sad and beautiful world…” at Wilding Cran Gallery
From Lindsay Preston Zappas, KCRW's Art Insider: "To title a group exhibition “It’s a sad and beautiful world…” is to set up a distinct tonal resonance. Particularly in lieu of a press release, those six words provide the only context. Many of the works seem to deal with the pandemic’s ensuing social isolation and the longing for connection. A glum figure in Katja Farin’s “Ominous Music” (which was painted during quarantine) lays on a plush rug reading a book, empty…

Michelle Blade at Wilding Cran Gallery
In Michelle Blade’s solo exhibition of paintings and drawings at Wilding Cran, everyday life meets the supernatural. Blade’s paintings use fluid acrylic on poplin, which allows for a…

Stephen Neidich at Wilding Cran Gallery
When you walk into Wilding Cran Gallery, a secret motion sensor is tripped, kicking off an 8 minute orchestrated performance. The performers are kinetic sculptural works made from steel and wire, welded into formations that resemble blinds. Each sculpture plays its part in the kinetic dance — the largest one in the room (which resembles vertical blinds and is backlit with an ominous red glow) slowly unfurls across a wall as large cogs and chains direct its motion. Suddenly, a…

February James at Wilding Cran
It’s the last week to check out February James’ solo exhibition at Wilding Cran, (Don’t) Take Me With You. The exhibition consists of paintings, drawings, installation, and sculpture, and draws heavily on James’ personal life: the work mines her childhood, family, and current relationship with her young son. Tender portraits of family and friends utilize washy watercolor so that the faces strategically bleed and blur, heightening the emotional tenor of the work. A small peep hole installed in a gallery…
