Evan Whale at Tyler Park Presents
Tucked into a modest space on Sunset, Tyler Park Presents opened last month with its inaugural exhibition: a solo show by Evan Whale of mixed-media photographs that were all made during the pandemic. The works in the show, titled “In My Room,” were photographed from the quarantined space of the artist’s own bedroom. There are shots of a neighbor’s roof, an abstract representation of the peacock that regularly strolls the neighborhood, and a large orange tree in the artist’s front yard. These…

Paul Pescador at Tyler Park Presents
At Tyler Park Presents, artist Paul Pescador presents two bodies of photographic work, all made in 2021. In the main gallery, the “Emancipation of P.P.” series takes up the artist’s dense, colorful, and playful style in pattern-filled photographic collages. Each contains a central cartoonish figure made up of household items and costumes (a deflated emoji beach ball becomes a sagging head, a loofa becomes a tutu). Surrounding these whimsical constructions are images of Pescador, who is non-binary and trans, in…

“I Am Not This Body” at Tyler Park Presents
In Silver Lake, Tyler Park Presents has invited curators Juliana Paciulli and Evan Whale to organize its summer group show. Whale studied with Ess as a student at Bard College, and the exhibition is a sentimental remembrance of the influential teacher and artist. “I AM NOT THIS BODY. But I am. Aching and full of longing,” Ess’ text…

Daniel Ingroff at Tyler Park Presents
The largest piece in Daniel Ingroff’s solo exhibition at Tyler Park Presents is a painting of an open palm against a flat, forest green background (Meridians, 2020). The painting feels diagrammatic, but rather than denoting pressure points, various objects are painted across the hand like symbolic markers linked to past experiences or emotions. A ladder climbs the index finger; a spine hugs the outer edge of the palm; and a cricket makes his way towards the thumb. This work indexes…

Daniel Ingroff at Tyler Park Presents
Daniel Ingroff’s series of paintings at Tyler Park Presents build on each other in unexpected and inexplicable ways. Each of the modestly sized works presents an odd scenario, often involving a figure engaging in a fantastical or dreamlike scene. From the mystical (as in Sky Pour, in which two hands hold goblets while emerging out of circular portals to pour liquid from one chalice to another) to the surreal (as in Projector, which depicts a close crop of a face…
