Sandy Rodriguez at Charlie James Gallery

February 25, 2020 - March 3, 2020
Charlie James Gallery #1, 969 Chung King Rd
Los Angeles, CA 90012 United States

On view: January 25–March 7, 2020 In Chinatown, Sandy Rodriguez’s solo exhibition honors the seven child migrants who died while in custody of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection between 2018 and 2019. Each child has been rendered in a loving watercolor portrait, made with indigenous materials (she uses hand-processed watercolors and a ceremonial handmade bark paper). The exhibition traces these children’s border crossings via a large hand-painted map that pinpoints various events, flora, and fauna along their route. The…

October 2021

Lucia Hierro at Charlie James

October 2, 2021 - November 22, 2021
Charlie James Gallery #1, 969 Chung King Rd
Los Angeles, CA 90012 United States

At Charlie James in Chinatown, Lucia Hierro’s Tal Cual pulls the bodega into the gallery. A large-scale mural, Diligencia mimics a retail building’s facade: vinyl decals applied to the wall picture businesses and detritus in the artist’s neighborhood of Washington Heights/Inwood in New York. In addition to the mural, several of Hierro’s Mercado works (soft sculptures of oversized shopping bags that hang on large hooks) are on view. Each bag is made with a transparent fabric so that the items…

September 2022

Patrick Martinez at Charlie James Gallery

September 17, 2022 - October 22, 2022

Patrick Martinez has an uncanny way of pulling the outside in. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Martinez’s large-scale paintings (which he refers to as landscapes) speak the language of Angeleno streets — assembled and painted on stucco grounds, the works are layered constructions that mashup an array of references. Martinez layers images of sunsets, rattle-can line work, and Aztec and Mayan figures beneath found vinyl banners, neon signage, and grids of tile.  The paintings, made of the same materials…

Glenn Hardy Jr. at Charlie James Gallery

January 14, 2023 - February 11, 2023
Charlie James Gallery #1, 969 Chung King Rd
Los Angeles, CA 90012 United States
+ Google Map

At Charlie James, Glenn Hardy Jr.’s Who Am I If I Don’t Represent? challenges negative biases about the contemporary Black experience. In the Maryland-based, self-taught artist’s second solo exhibition with the gallery, scenes of positivity lead the way. Hardy’s paintings are suffused with influence from artists like Kerry James Marshall and Ernie Barnes, with uplifting imagery of Black people at play, in the workplace, or in celebratory communion.  Particularly tender are paintings like Happiest Hours and Family Reunion (both 2022),…

July 2023

Elmer Guevara at Charlie James Gallery

July 22, 2023 - September 16, 2023
Charlie James Gallery #1, 969 Chung King Rd
Los Angeles, CA 90012 United States
+ Google Map

Elmer Guevara, a Salvadorian artist who was raised in South Central LA, draws from familial memories in his large-scale paintings. Family members can be seen in paintings recovering from hangovers or napping in hammocks. A large self-portrait in his solo show at Charlie James Gallery pictures the artist playing pool in a domestic interior surrounded by trappings of his childhood and family history—empty beer bottles, family photos, and a Salvadorian flag are dotted throughout. Notably, Guevara’s works are mixed media;…
