Maija Peeples-Bright at Parker Gallery

September 13, 2020 - October 31, 2020
Parker Gallery, 2441 Glendower Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90027 United States

Walking into Parker Gallery’s solo exhibition of Maija Peeples-Bright is like jumping into the fantastical world of the artist’s own creation — one in which Lady Godiva is adorned with prancing geese, and alligators, pandas, and giraffes mingle with millipede-corgis. For Peeples-Bright, the animal world is exuberant, playful, and in full technicolor. At the opening over the weekend, the 78-year-old artist sported a bespoke tunic, hat, shoes, and facemask, all hand-painted by the artist, and depicting her exuberant animals that she calls…

Gladys Nilsson at Parker Gallery

November 7, 2020 - January 9, 2021
Parker Gallery, 2441 Glendower Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90027 United States

Gladys Nilsson (b. 1940) was an iconic member of the Hairy Who, a group of artists that banded together in Chicago in the 1960s to exhibit their wildly idiosyncratic work. The group of six, which included Jim Nutt and Karl Wirsum, privileged graphic and bold figuration that was playful and imaginative as much as it was irreverent. Nilsson’s solo exhibition, “Old Lady Drawings” at Parker Gallery assembles three decades of the artist’s output, with several works that were created this…

Luam Melake at Parker Gallery

January 30, 2021 - March 27, 2021
Parker Gallery, 2441 Glendower Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90027 United States

There are only a couple more weeks to catch Luam Melake’s “Sensitive Forms” at Parker Gallery. The solo show hangs in the gallery’s small upstairs gallery and features several weavings and a modular furniture set. The furniture, titled “Better Together,” is made with wood, acrylics, and polyurethane that can be arranged in a variety of ways, encouraging reconfiguration and experimentation. Melake’s weavings also bend the medium to new experimental ends. In “Outpouring,” the artist weaves long rubber tubes, whose fronds…

Joan Brown at Parker Gallery

November 7, 2021 - January 8, 2022
Parker Gallery, 2441 Glendower Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90027 United States

At Parker Gallery, a rare collection of works by Joan Brown is a delightful foray into the artist’s early work. Brown, who began making work in the late ’50s Bay Area art scene, became known for a style of flat figuration — paintings in which female figures (often self-portraits) float within skewed perspective backgrounds and loud geometric patterns. One such work is included in the Parker show (Running at McAteer Park,1976), but the majority of the show is dedicated to…

Troy Lamarr Chew II at Parker Gallery

September 9, 2023 - October 28, 2023
Parker Gallery, 2441 Glendower Ave

Some of Troy Lamarr Chew II’s paintings at Parker Gallery might look a bit familiar. For his show, Y’all Feel Me?!, the artist made paintings of classic hip-hop albums and music video stills, but swapped his face with each musician. Instantly recognizable is a portrait of Chew as Missy Elliot from her classic “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly),” sporting bike helmet, shades, and the iconic garbage bag suit. Chew also doctored an MTV logo in the corner of the painting…
