THE NEW INFINITY: NEW ART FOR PLANETARIUMS

Buy Tickets

Internationally-acclaimed, planetarium-inspired immersive art experience The New Infinity is making its U.S. premiere at Wisdome LA on Saturday, June 29. Bringing new art to planetariums, the co-production between Berliner Festspiele/Immersion and Planetarium Hamburg will feature immersive films from award-winning artists David OReilly, Holly Herndon & Mathew Dryhurst, and Fatima Al Qadiri & Transform, screened in a 360-degree dome theatre. In between screenings, The New Infinity will host the Planetary Art Summit exploring the realms of planetariums and immersive art.

Up until now, planetariums have mainly been utilized by the scientific and educational communities. But planetariums have the potential to showcase some of the largest and most impressive artistic images of our time, combined with the immersive sound of highly developed 360-degree audio technology.

For the past two years The New Infinity and its program series Immersion have been providing artists with advanced technology and supporting the development of new artistic works. This project is made possible by a specially developed test dome at the Planetarium Hamburg, which is available free of charge to the artists and technicians. The aim of this project is not only to democratize planetarium spaces, but also as a way to showcase contemporary artists who have developed specific works of art for this “new” medium.

After a highly successful launch of The New Infinity in Germany and touring international festivals, The New Infinity will be presented for the first time in the United States at Wisdome.LA.

PLANETARY ART SUMMIT

The event will also include a discussion with artists, members of the Los Angeles arts and culture community, technologists, and leaders in the realms of planetariums and immersive art. The conversation will explore the potential for planetariums to become the galleries of the future, how planetariums and artistic dome content allow viewers to experience new realities, and how contemporary art in planetariums can help cities create new cultural communities. Schedule to follow.

The program Immersion was made possible by an initiative of the German Federal Parliament and thanks to the support of the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.
