SUNNY LEVINE (8.30pm)

Singer, songwriter, producer Sunny Levine hails from one of the most legendary musical bloodlines on the planet. His grandfather Quincy Jones made music with icons like Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Sarah Vaughan and countless others. His father Stewart Levine (who plays horns on Sunny’s latest album) worked with Hugh Masekela, B.B. King, Joe Cocker, and Simply Red and Sunny’s uncle QD3 produced records for Tupac and Ice Cube.

Clearly inspired by all this, Sunny the family’s latest heir has blazed numerous trails on his own, scoring films and crafting albums with artists such as Shabazz Palaces, Pete Yorn, Scarlett Johansson, Happy Mondays, and Ariel Pink.

His own new album Notions (out June 15th on Alpha Pup) is a continuation of this powerful legacy and builds new roads for the seasoned Los Angeles-based musician himself.

Notions unravels the rich complexity of Sunny’s expansive worldview with eight tracks which inspire a spine-tingling sense of exploration. To highlight just a few of Notions’ offerings, the first single “D.A.Z.E.” wavers with distortion behind a slow-rolling surfer vibe, featuring living legend guitarist Ry Cooder. With avant-funk lyrics and a pensive gaze, “Crime Lords” fuses a gospel uplift with the raw growl of Shabazz Palaces (whose last album Quazarz vs. The Jealous Machines Sunny produced).

N’DAMBI featuring T. BROWN (7.30pm)

Blessed with a deep contralto, N’Dambi distills soul-deep inspiration into a sensual style of elegance and power, making her a fundamental addition to the R&B/Soul movement of our times while resounding the energies of past soul sisters like Nina Simone, Tina Turner, and Chaka Khan.

Starting her carer as a background singer with Erykah Badu she released three critically acclaimed independent albums enchanting audiences world-wide followed by a Grammy nominated album for the legendary Stax Records.

Now in 2018 imagine a time capsule aboard a deep spacecraft headed to eternity. The past informed by the present which aptly describes N’Dambi’s new EP Air Castle (just out on Alpha Pup), together with All Cows Eat Grass front-man T. Brown.

Brown, former music director for Janelle Monáe, joined forces for this cosmic soul outing pairing the organic warmth of N’Dambi’s honeyed vocals and sophisticated songwriting with synthesizer layers, 80’s sonic cues and retro-future compositions that defy easy categorization. N’Dambi declares “This project is an experience….a trip. Depending on where you come from determines how you hear it”.
