SPRING/BREAK pops up in Culver City

Buy Tickets

SPRING/BREAK, a third fair that popped up in LA alongside Frieze’s first LA iteration in 2019, is a different model for an art fair. The fair changes locations with each edition, with this one taking place in Culver City. Unlike a typical gallery-focused art fair, SPRING/BREAK’s emphasis is on curators, and there is no participation fee, with the fair instead taking a small percentage of sales.

This approach tends to prompt participants to try out more experiential and immersive installations that are less sales-focused. The fair organizers told me that this year’s theme, Hearsay Heresy, draws subtly on medieval influences. Fair organizers were thinking about the plague vs. the pandemic, and are interested in seeing how participating artists might interpret this theme loosely. Actor Alia Shawkat (who you might know from the shows “Arrested Development” and “Search Party”) will be contributing her artwork to the fair and collaborating with a childhood friend on site. Artworld meme-ster Jerry Gagosian will be presenting original works, and Maripol will also be participating. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased here.
