Songs of the Disinherited

Considered a masterwork in the American modern dance canon, Donald McKayle’s “Songs of the Disinherited” chronicles the marginalization, suffering, and joy of African Americans in the United States. The works continued presentation by dance companies across the country prove its themes are as relevant today as when the piece first premiered in Los Angeles in 1972.

SMC’s Synapse Contemporary Dance Theater is honored to present the two culminating movements of this masterwork; Angelitos Negros, a towering depiction of female strength and a study in black majesty, and Shaker Life, a joyous entry into the spiritual life of the black church. For over 40 years, Synapse Contemporary Dance Theater has contributed to the cultural life of Los Angeles. The ensemble has performed across the region as well as at festivals throughout the US, in England, France, and Switzerland.
