REEL TO REEL: MAVIS!

Buy Tickets

MAVIS! is the first documentary on gospel/soul music legend and civil rights icon Mavis Staples and her family group, The Staple Singers. From the freedom songs of the ’60s and hits like “I’ll Take You There” in the ’70s, to funked-up collaborations with Prince and her recent albums with Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, Mavis has stayed true to her roots, kept her family close, and inspired millions along the way. Directed by Jessica Edwards and featuring powerful live performances, rare archival footage, and conversations with friends and contemporaries including Bob Dylan, Prince, Bonnie Raitt, Levon Helm, Jeff Tweedy, Chuck D, and more, MAVIS! reveals the struggles, successes, and intimate stories of Mavis’ journey.

At 77, she’s making the most vital music of her career and in February 2016 she released her latest album, Livin’ On A High Note.  Produced by M. Ward, the album features songs written specifically for Mavis by Nick Cave, Justin Vernon, tUnE-yArds, Neko Case, Valerie June, Aloe Blacc, Benjamin Booker, Ben Harper, Son Little, The Head & The Heart, Jon Batiste, and M.Ward. Among Mavis’ awards and accolades include the 2016 Kennedy Center Honors award, induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, an NEA National Heritage Fellowship, and Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award.

The GRAMMY Museum is pleased to present a special screening of MAVIS! followed by an intimate conversation with Jessica Edwards and Mavis Staples. The conversation will be followed by a special performance from Mavis. MAVIS! will be available on DVD and home video on Nov. 15, 2016.
