La Perla
Mar 9 • 7:00 pm PDT
La Perla is a musical project founded in 2014 by Karen Forero, Giovanna Mogollón and Diana Sanmiguel, musicians with over a decade of experience exploring the musical traditions of the Colombian Caribbean, particularly gaitas, drums, and sung dances. Over the years, they have evolved their aesthetic and stage presence while maintaining a core foundation that has earned them recognition in Colombia. In 2015, they made history by becoming the first group from Bogotá and the second all-female ensemble to win the amateur category at the Gaita’s Festival of Ovejas, Sucre.
Inspired by the traditional sounds of the Caribbean, La Perla merges cultural legacies with innovative influences to craft a distinctive sound that reflects the new wave of Colombian music. They have performed extensively in concert halls, bars, cultural centers, and festivals, presenting both traditional and original works. Their international journey began in 2017 with a tour in Mexico, followed by the release of their debut EP Paren la Bulla on Mambo Negro Records. In 2018, the single Bruja gained them widespread recognition, including its inclusion in the Netflix series Siempre Bruja. That same year, they toured Chile and Europe, performing in Spain, Italy, and Switzerland.
Between 2019 and 2020, La Perla solidified their global presence with tours across the United States, Europe, and Mexico, performing in iconic venues and festivals. Highlights include appearances at the Ground Up Festival in Miami, legendary bars like Barbés and Terraza 7 in New York, and their Macarena Tour across major European cities, where they played over 20 concerts. In February 2020, they embarked on the Guayabo Tour in Mexico, releasing the single Guayabo, further establishing themselves as ambassadors of Colombia’s vibrant musical heritage.
