‘In and Out’ at Sidecar

Free

Sidecar, a new exhibition space in Night Gallery’s sprawling downtown complex, touts an exploratory and collaborative ethos. One aim of Night Gallery founder, Davida Nemeroff, who is also leading the Sidecar project, is to collaborate with other galleries to host exhibitions. Rachel Uffner Gallery, based in New York, has curated the current exhibition, In and Out, a linguistic pun on our beloved burger joint.

The group show (largely including artists represented by Uffner), has a scant curatorial framework, although it is a great opportunity to get to know some talented non-LA-based artists. Talia Levitt’s layered paintings take pointillism to a new level, layering microscopic painted lines (that she applies with a piping bag) over painted floral backdrops. The effect is looking at two layered paintings simultaneously, made even more dynamic with shifting color tones across the painted surfaces. Sheree Hovsepian’s framed works combine figurative photographs with geometric wooden forms and string to minimal and evocative effects, creating poetic compositions. Sacha Ingber’s small sculptures feel like magical realist narratives come to life — figures become houses become mythical fanged animals. Anne Buckwalter’s precisely painted domestic interiors expose cheeky moments of sensuous encounters, that play out behind cracked bedroom doors. Together, many of the works across the show find resonance in their bold approach to depicting quiet domestic moments that play out in our day-to-day lives.
