In Gifts of the Spirit: Prophecy, Automatism and Discernment, Los Angeles-based performance artist Ron Athey "completes" his memoir ("Gifts of the Spirit") in ecstatic communion with 16 writers, six typists, musicians, a hypnotist, and vocalists who speak in tongues. Athey has been writing his memoir since 1980, when he moved away from the Pentecostal and Spiritualist practices in which he was raised, making the deconsecrated cathedral of St. Vibiana the perfect venue for this work.
