Film: That Thing You Do!
December 8, 2016 • 7:30 pm(All times are in PDT)
1996, 108 min, color, 35mm | Written by Tom Hanks; directed by Tom Hanks, with Tom Everett Scott, Liv Tyler, Johnathon Schaech, Steve Zahn, Ethan Embry, Paul Feig, Giovanni Ribisi, and Tom Hanks
For the 20th anniversary of Tom Hanks’s debut as writer/director, join us for a screening of his film (produced by his Philadelphia director Jonathan Demme) that both celebrates the headiness and capriciousness of fame and examines it. Tom Everett Scott—who resembles a younger version of the writer/director—stars as Guy in this 1960s set period film as a jazz drummer who finds himself roped into a onetime sit-in gig to help his friends’ pop group. Guy swings the melancholy ode to love into an up-tempo number that suddenly puts him and his friends—Johnathon Schaech, Steve Zahn, and Ethan Embry—on a rocket to the top, first in their local Pennsylvania town to the national charts. The cast also includes Liv Tyler, Charlize Theron, Paul Feig, Giovanni Ribisi, and Tom Hanks; and the title song was nominated for the Oscar® for Best Song.
