Film Independent LACMA: Chasing Coral

RSVP

2017, 93 minutes, color, DCP | Directed by Jeff Orlowski

Includes a conversation with director Jeff Orlowski

Director Jeff Orlowski’s examination of the destruction of the Earth’s coral beds, Chasing Coral, was the winner of the Audience Award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. And given that there now seems to be a tragic race between what will disappear soonerthe coral, or the efforts of the Environmental Protection Agency to combat damage to ocean bedsthere’s no better time to see Orlowski’s follow-up to his 2012 project about the ruin of nature by man, Chasing IceIce offered the harrowing tableau of mountainous shards of glacier disintegrating; Coral builds a mesmerizing story around the awful beauty of death, as the director provides time-lapse footage of coral calcifying before the unblinking camera lens. The filmmakerwho also did much of the cinematographycomes to the Bing Theater to talk about the film after the screening.
