Includes a conversation with 2017 Film Independent Spirit John Cassavetes Award Nominees
For our annual salute to Film Independent’s Cassavetes Award nominees, we screen a film by the influential and inspirational movie figure John Cassavetes. Commemorating its 20th anniversary this year, She’s So Lovely comes from a Cassavetes script that the ambitious writer, director, and actor was unable to make before his death; his son, actor/director Nick Cassavetes, picked up the mantle and directed this drama about the tumult in the marriage of the reliable Eddie (Sean Penn) and his self-destructive wife, Maureen (Robin Wright). The younger Cassavetes assembled an able cast that included James Gandolfini, John Travolta, and his mother—and longtime collaborator with his dad—Gena Rowlands.
