Film: An Evening With…Damien Chazelle and Screening The Umbrellas of Cherbourg
January 5, 2017 • 7:30 pm PST
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg | 1964, 91 min, color, new digital restoration | Written by Jacques Demy; directed by Jacques Demy; with Catherine Deneuve and Nino Castelnuovo
Includes a conversation with Damien Chazelle
Since starting his film career in 2009, writer/director Damien Chazelle has made an enormous splash in the movies. His collection of work starts with the 2009 short film Guy and Madeline on a Park Benchto the 2013 short Whiplash, which he expanded into the feature version of Whiplash the following year. The full-length Whiplash won three Academy Awards® for Best Supporting Actor (for J.K. Simmons), Best Editing, and Best Sound Mixing. Chazelle’s bone-deep love of music and film has taken him from Guy and Madeline to his newest work, 2016’s La La Land, a full-blown musical—made in Cinemascope—that’s a tribute to the genre, the transformational (and transitory) power of love and a look at Los Angeles. Chazelle comes to the Bing Theater to discuss his work and life. And following the one-on-one conversation, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Jacques Demy’s classic 1964 musical about songs, love and a dream—and a major influence on Chazelle himself—will be shown.
