Ernesto Neto at Tanya Bonakdar Gallery

On View: September 14–November 2, 2019

As an adult, it’s not often that you are encouraged to unabashedly play. Ernesto Neto has made a career of creating artwork that invites participation and activates all of the senses: auditory, tactile, sensory, and immensely visual. This exhibition does nothing less. To fully integrate into this scenario, you will be offered a camouflage tree patterned hoodie and pants to wear as you lounge inside of Children of the Earth (shoes off!): an installation filled with sensory delights. Scents of turmeric and paprika waft, crystals and stones dangle, and percussion instruments have been worked into the hand-crocheted network of bulbous forms. Perhaps when I visited this exhibition, I was in need of rest, but the single-person bed in the second gallery—that charts chakra points and gently sways as you lay back, cocooned in woven pattering—offered this writer a moment of self-care and connection to the natural world. Lounge back, explore, or play the drums—this space was created for you. And how often do you get to touch (and play with) the art?
