Día de los Muertos Online Exhibition: ‘Ofrendas 2020’
Nov 1 - Nov 22(All times are in PDT)
Self Help Graphics & Art helped launch Día de los Muertos celebrations in Southern California as part of the Mexican-American reclamation of indigenous identity during the Chicano movement. Their first celebration was in 1972. Now the festival is widely popular.
This year Self Help Graphics is hosting a virtual exhibition ‘Ofrendas 2020‘, curated by Sandy Rodriguez and bringing together Los Angeles artists spanning generations: Nao Bustamante, Barbara Carrasco, Carolyn Castaño, Enrique Castrejon, Yreina Cervantez, Audrey Chan, Christina Fernandez, Consuelo Flores, Isabelle Lutterodt, Rigo Maldonado, Guadalupe Rodriguez, Shizu Saldamando, Gabriella Sanchez, Devon Tsuno, Sandra de la Loza and Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights.
Rodriguez’s print (pictured), ‘Guadalupe Rodriguez, Autorretrato en el Panteón, 2003’, is an homage to her mother, artist Guadalupe Rodriguez. For this limited edition serigraph, Sandy recreated a self-portrait painting by her mother in 2003.
