Cybercrime: An Industry of Anonymity

Jonathan Lusthaus, a writer and scholar specializing in the study of profit-driven cybercrime, will speak at a Global Café Breakfast on Wednesday, November 7^th. Conceptual in his approach, Lusthaus’s work attempts to make sense of the world of cybercrime, rather than report on its latest news. Oddly non-technological, with a background in sociology, international security and law, he focuses on the “human” side of cybercrime: who inhabits this world and how they are organized. Having met with hundreds of law enforcement agents, security gurus, hackers and criminals in the world’s cybercrime hotspots, Lusthuas will give an in depth look into how this business works, whether it can be thwarted and how we can protect ourselves from future attacks.

Lusthaus is Director of The Human Cybercriminal Project at the Extra-Legal Governance Institute, Department of Sociology at Nuffield College, Oxford University. He has written widely across academic, policy and media publications, including Global Crime, Democracy and Pacific Standard. He teaches sociological theory to undergraduates. He holds a doctorate in Sociology from the University of Oxford, where he was a Clarendon Scholar.

This event will be moderated by Justin Hughes, Hon. William Matthew Burns, Jr. Chair at Loyola Law School. From 2009 through 2013, Professor Hughes also worked in the Obama Administration as Senior Advisor to the Undersecretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property. In that capacity he was the United States chief negotiator for the Beijing Treaty on Audiovisual Performances (2012) and the Marrakesh Treaty for the Blind (2013).
