Contigo at GGLA
Feb 10 - Mar 23
GGLA’s Contigo is a thirteen-person group show co-curated by Angelik Vizcarrondo-Laboy. The exhibition features the work of artists from across the United States and south of the border, including DL Alvarez, Gregory Bojorquez, Aaron Estrada, Justin Favela, Lizette Hernández, Xandra Ibarra, Salvador Jiménez-Flores, Anabel Juárez, Raul De Lara, Higinio Martinez, Ruben Ulises Rodriguez Montoya, Mitsy Avila Ovalles, and Georgina Treviño. Contigo, which translates from Spanish to English as “with you,” reveals a diversity of practices employed by the artists while hinting at their shared experiences.
There are three major themes or curatorial threads found in the exhibition. First, many of the artists focus on the physical landscape and built environment of Spanish-speaking communities in Los Angeles. Others emphasize the materiality and significance of chosen materials. For many artists in the exhibition, there is a return to traditional artistic and craft techniques.
