Breaking the Waves

Missy Mazzoli’s harrowing and impassioned opera Breaking the Waves comes to LA Opera audiences in a special digital presentation (meaning you can watch from the comfort of your own home).

Based on Lars von Trier’s cinematic masterpiece, Breaking the Waves takes place after a near-fatal accident leaves Bessʼs new husband paralyzed. In his anguish, he implores her to take other lovers. Torn between her husband’s wishes and the traditional values of her small community, she determinedly follows her faith to a tragic end.

Originally filmed by Opera Philadelphia during their world premiere production, LA Opera is presenting a new cut of the masterful work that The New York Times calls “powerful [and] daring.”
