Brandon Ndife at Matthew Brown

Free

At Matthew Brown on La Brea, New York-based artist Brandon Ndife has created enigmatic sculptures that merge domestic spaces with the raw wildness of natural and urban environments to speak to the everyday constraints of living under capitalism. In a series of sculptures that begin with generic-looking cabinets, desks, or couches, the artist casts a slew of organic and man-made objects, slotting them into the furniture pieces so that they look as though they are being overrun by nature in some post-apocalyptic dystopia.

To complicate this reading, a series of awnings and shade cloths are installed throughout the gallery, symbols of upkeeping business as usual despite the objects that have fallen into disarray. A series of graphic and colored pencil drawings complete the sparsely-hung show and picture fauna in various states of rot. Together, the exhibition presents a precinct portrait of our unstable relationship with both nature and capitalist systems.
