A Marriage of Church and State?

RSVP

July 16, 2020 • 5:00 pm PDT

Did the Supreme Court just blur the line between church and state? The court recently ruled that when states create scholarship programs using public funds, they must provide those public funds to both secular and religious schools. This is arguably an expansion of the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment at the expense of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. Is this a victory for some low income parents who now have more choices about where to send their children to school? Does this apparent victory come at the expense of a strong separation between religion and government?

Moderator Jessica Levinson is joined by fellow Loyola Law School professor Kimberly West-Faulcon and Georgia State law professor Eric Segall to discuss the court’s recent decision and what this means for religious freedom in the United States.
