The Psychedelic Furs

If you were to dissect today’s alternative rock music, you’d find that much of it pays homage to The Psychedelic Furs. Led by vocalist and songwriter Richard Butler, and his bass-wielding brother Tim, the Furs scored major hits with “Love My Way,” “Pretty in Pink,” “Heaven,” “The Ghost In You,” and “Heartbreak Beat” releasing seven studio albums in-all, spawning several compilations, a boxed set, and a live concert DVD.

Born out of the post-punk UK rock scene, the Furs quickly developed as one of the premiere bands on US College and Modern Rock radio, scoring a multitude of No. 1 singles. With the advent of MTV in the early ’80s, the band took off into the stratosphere, and when John Hughes approached the band with his film built around the Furs’ song “Pretty in Pink,” the band’s legacy was cemented.

After a brief hiatus in the ’90s, and a side project called “Love Spit Love,” the band regrouped at the dawn of the new millennium.

The Psychedelic Furs touring lineup remains Richard Butler (vocals), Tim Butler (bass), Rich Good (guitar), Mars Williams (saxophone), Amanda Kramer (keyboards), and Paul Garisto (drums).

Day Wave

Jackson Phillips has only been creating music under the moniker Day Wave since fall 2014, and in just under six months, the 25-year-old has become one of the most buzzworthy and refreshing artists to burst onto the DIY scene. A departure from his synth-heavy work as one half of electro-pop duo Carousel, Day Wave crafts dreamy, lo-fi, guitar-driven indie-pop that is already turning heads. With a modest but top-quality catalogue of a five-song EP and limited run 7″, Phillips – who writes, produces, and performs all of his songs, and tracks each instrument himself on an old reel-to-reel, no less – is currently working on his debut LP and live show. Having already claimed multiple No. 1 artist slots on Hype Machine and the Zane Lowe/Apple Music seal of approval with his lauded “Headcase” EP, in addition to play list adds on Alt Nation, XMU, KCRW (including Jason Bentley’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic”), KEXP, WXPN, and more, Day Wave shows no signs of slowing down.
