This is the feature film debut of writers and directors Kate and Laura Mulleavy, best known as the fashion design team Rodarte. Their design work has displayed a connection to narrative momentum and psychological subtext, so their pivot to filmmaking is a natural progression. In Woodshock, set in a small town, Theresa (Kirsten Dunst) is riven by grief—so poleaxed by depression, she can barely rouse herself to leave her home and work her job at a medical cannabis dispensary. It gives her a chance to interact with friends, neighbors, and former intimates—and the wordless connection that the Mulleavys soak Woodshock with provides an oscillating sense of despair. Theresa’s condition worsens that events overtake the town, and Woodshock finally lands with confidence of a remake of Polanski’s Repulsion, directed by Nan Goldin and photographed by Bruce Conner. The filmmakers will talk about their work in a Q&A after the screening.
